THIS IS FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

...A HURRICANE WATCH REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE LEEWARD ISLAND...AT LEAST A TROPICAL STORM WATCH WLL GO INTO EFFECT FOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS BY TOMORROW...

A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS THAT HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA TYPICALLY WITHIN 48 HOURS.

AT 11 AM ECT OR 1500 UTC, TROPICAL STORM MARIA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 13.5 NORTH, LONGITUDE 56.2 WEST OR ABOUT 445 MILES SOUTHEAST OF ANTIGUA AND 650 MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.

MARIA IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHEAST AT 15 MPH, AND THIS MOTION WITH A FURTHER REDUCTION IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, MARIA WILL BE NEAR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS ON TUESDAY AND THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS ON WEDNESDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 65 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. FURTHER STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS, AND MARIA WILL LIKELY BECOME A HURRICANE LATER TODAY AND BE A MAJOR HURRICANE AT ITS NEAREST POINT TO THE ISLANDS.

TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUT 70 MILES FROM THE CENTRE.

THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 994 MB (29.36 INCHES).

BASED ON THE LAST ISSUED FORECAST TRACK, MARIA IS FORECAST TO PASS WITHIN 115 MILES OF ALL THE ISLANDS. THIS MEANS, AT LEAST, STORM-FORCE WINDS ARE LIKELY ACROSS THE AREA TUESDAY FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND WEDNESDAY FOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. AT THIS TIME, THERE IS A LOW CHANCE OF HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS REACHING THE AREA.

SEAS WILL START TO DETERIORATE TOMORROW AND WILL LIKELY PEAK NEAR 7.5 METRES OR 25 FEET DURING THE PASSAGE OF THE STORM. ALSO, STORM-SURGE OF UP TO 6 FEET IS POSSIBLE. A HIGH SURF AND OTHER MARINE WARNINGS WILL GO INTO EFFECT TOMORROW. BEACH-GOERS SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACHES, AND MARINERS SHOULD SECURE THEIR VESSELS.

RAINFALL TOTALS OF 2 TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF MARIA. HENCE, FLASH FLOODING IS LIKELY. A FLASH FLOOD WATCHES WILL BE ISSUED SOME TIME TOMORROW AND TUESDAY. RESIDENTS LIVING IN LOW LYING AND FLOOD PRONE AREAS SHOULD PREPARE TO TAKE ACTIONS TO MITIGATE MODERATE TO MAJOR FLOODING.

RESIDENTS SHOULD START TO EXECUTE THEIR HURRICANE PLAN, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY OFFICIALS AND CONTINUE TO MONITOR MARIA CLOSELY.
